Hello Troop 288 Parents!
We are at the end of our second day of camp and we have all managed to stay dry for the most part, but we all know that is about to change. First and foremost we would like every parent to know that the camp is monitoring the weather very closely. The boys have already participated in a camp wide severe weather drill. We are also monitoring the weather from our campsite and the boys have a plan.
Everyone is having fun with their merit badge classes and our first year scouts are really enjoying the Trail to First Class related programs. In their spare time the boys are enjoying actives like swimming, the blob, and many of the boys have been fishing with several participating in a fishing tornament this evening. Most importantly the boys have just enjoyed being in camp together playing cards, throwing the frisbee or football, and sitting around the campfire telling stories. Everyone is getting along just great! Tommorow night some of the boys will be participating in a rodeo that includes catching a greased pig and chasing down a goat to remove a ribbon from around its neck. I will have the video camera rolling.
No camp update would be complete without some color commentary on the camp food. The menu has included chicken fried meat “product”, pot roast that was slightly better than the CFS, and tonight was chicken fajitas that actually tasted like chicken fajitas. The meals are served family style so all the boys make their own plates. This is a change compared to past camps where the boys were served each portion by standing in a serving line which I think is more efficient, less wasteful, and far less messy. After each meal the dining hall looks like a Golden Corral on a Saturday night. There is an optional salad bar that does offer both scouts and adults some more options. The boys seemed to be enjoying the food, but part of me thinks they are still thinking about the churros they had for desert tonight.
One important note, Friday night is family night. If you have time please come down Friday evening and see your boys enjoying this beautiful camp. Dinner will be served and meal tickets are 6 dollars per person. The camp has asked that if you plan on coming please do not arrive earlier than 4pm on Friday. Let me know if you are coming and I will get your meal tickets for you. Again, please come if you can…you will be glad that you did!
Below are some pictures from camp…more later.
